Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoyevsky

A great novel about Rodya Raskolnikov a young Russian intellectual living in ugly poverty. To eat he is forced to pawn precious possessions to greedy loan-shark Alyona. If he kills her, Rodya argues, he commits no crime but rather will rid the world of a "filthy insect". As Alyona examines Rodya's silver cigarette case he kills her. Despite this 'not being a crime', he suffers fearful guilt and inevitable punishment. But it is Sonya an abused young woman forced into prostitution by her father, who holds the power of Rodya's redemption. Dramatisation is superb and chilling especially with Petrovich a police officer who suspects Rodya's guilt.
